Then go to the Karanki indigenous community of Magdalena located at the slopes of the Imbabura Volcano and surrounded by mountains, where we have developed a social and community-based tourism project. Choose one of the optional activities that can be enjoyed in this beautiful setting: horseback riding, mountain biking, or hiking up to the nearby hills. Enjoy a delicious lunch and this community’s beautiful setting. Share with this fascinating people a comfortable room with private facilities and hot water, (dinner included). Day 8: Otavalo surroundings
Breakfast. The tour includes landscapes of towering volcanoes with amazing opportunities for taking pictures, the crater lagoon of Cuicocha, excellent chance to see such an unusual formation of a lagoon, flanked by peaks and native flora, and finally small but well groomed town of Cotacachi, featuring leatherwork: bags, jackets, hats, gloves. Back to Quito
Day 9: Quito – Baños - Riobamba
Breakfast. Depart Quito towards the south highlands, drive along the “Avenue of the Volcanoes”. Weather permitting, the first giant to be seen is the volcano Cotopaxi, the world´s highest active snow covered volcano, among other Andean elevations. Headed east, start to descend to the valley of Patate, to the sub-tropical region where Baños is located. Baños is known as the “gateway to the Amazonia”. Tour of the Pastaza river canyon, known as the “Waterfall Avenue”, with some luck, observation of the active volcano Tungurahua ejecting its impressive fumaroles. Back again on the Pan-American high way we shall drive on the foothills of the highest elevation of Ecuador: Chimborazo, with over twenty thousand feet. Arrival to city of Riobamba, overnight.
Day 10: Riobamba - Devil’s Nose train ride – Ingapirca Ruins - Cuenca
Breakfast. From Riobamba we’ll go to Alausí, via la Balbanera, the first Spanish church built in the country. In Alausí, we will take a spectacular bus-train ride through the Devil’s Nose, a true feat in railway engineering of the early twentieth century. Box lunch. Continue south and experience a dramatic landscape change with deep canyons and small green valleys to reach the village of El Tambo and detour to visit the Incan Archaeological site of Ingapirca, which means "Wall of the Inca", this is the most important Incan relic in Ecuador. This citadel was built in the fifteenth century on an ancient route that connected Quito to Cuzco. The Solar Temple and the surrounding buildings follow the system of construction found in the ancient Incan capital, Cuzco.
Day 11: Cuenca - El Cajas National Park
City tour of Cuenca, a quaint colonial city, also known, for the profusion of handicrafts, such as pottery, embroidery, filigree jewels and the world wide known Panama hat. Then drive to El Cajas National Park. This area is known for its beautiful landscapes with at least 200 lagoons, like the famous La Toreadora. After lunch, drive to Guayaquil. Once in the low lands or coast we shall see plantations of Ecuador´s main exports: bananas, cacao, coffee, rice, mangos and sugar cane. Hotel accommodation.
Day 12: Guayaquil
